Bed Head and Other Beauty Challenges

In my experience, there’s little that cute braids and a tan can’t fix when it comes to taking a great travel photo. But it does make sense to plan ahead for times when primping isn’t possible. 

Here are some of the “must have” cosmetic items that I carry when I travel:

Hair accessories: I pack scarves, bandanas, hair ties and, if I expect really bad hair days, a stylish baseball cap. I often wrap my head with my vintage Hermes scarf -- bonus: it does double duty as a cute belt!

If your destination includes iconic hairstyles or headwear, give it a shot (as long as it’s culturally appropriate).

Pick up a beret in Paris, a cowboy hat in Texas, or a bush hat in Australia.

Skincare: I always pack a great cleanser and sunscreen. Sun, sand, and brisk winds can cause breakouts and blotchiness. If that does end up happening, don’t stress about it. There are plenty of filters and photo apps that can make that unsightly blemish disappear!

Makeup: If I’m visiting an urban location or planning to attend an important event, I’ll pack the glam kit. Otherwise, I keep my cosmetics simple and natural. A little tinted moisturizer, some lip gloss and mascara. Let the scenery be the star of your photos.

Unless you plan to actually see stars. You can always book an appointment to get your makeup professionally done when you arrive at your destination—like I did in Los Angeles when I attended the MTV Movie Awards!

Accessories: I always pack plenty of accessories—stackable rings and bracelets, layered necklaces and an assortment of stud and hoop earrings. I try to keep my destination in mind when I choose my material and color scheme.

Ornate gold earrings in Morocco, wooden bangles in Senegal, designer belts in NYC, turquoise in Texas. The accessories can really tie a look together!

Final tip, always get a mani/pedi before the start of a trip and consider getting a spray tan if you’re traveling to a beach location in the middle of winter. It’s always nice to get a head start on your travel style!
