Timing is Everything

Whenever possible, I try to avoid long lines and crowds. And there are plenty of travel blogs that give great tips about skip-the-line passes to major sites.

But when I’m planning to visit outdoor sites, I skip the crowds and get better lighting by planning a sunrise excursion. The earlier, the better. I’ve even pulled an all-nighter to avoid the early wake-up call!
Seriously, sunrise photos provide great natural lighting, plenty of time to work out the perfect angle/pose and allows the luxury of outfit changes without throngs of crowds. Plus, there’s still time for a leisurely stroll and a cappuccino as well as an afternoon nap.

Using my mini backpack for some outfit changes, I took these photos at sunrise. The only other people around were a few professional photographers taking wedding portraits. I practically had the place to myself! Not only did I get some great shots, but it was SO peaceful.

I’ve also adjusted my itinerary to ensure that I’m at a location when lighting will be best (such as sunset) or when it will be less attractive to other tourists (a famous shopping street after the stores close or a very cold Persian Gulf).
